- 9 oz (250 grams) of minced meat (50% pork, 50% beef)
- 10 sheets of puff pastry
- 2 beaten eggs (each one in a separate cup)
- 1 teaspoon of pepper
- half a teaspoon of nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons of parsley
- half a teaspoon of salt
- tablespoon of soy sauce
The saucijzenbroodje (sausage roll in English) is a popular Dutch recipe for lunch. There are roughly two types of Dutch recipes for sauasage rolls, and although both are prepared with minced meat, the difference is in the dough. There is the so-called “worstenbroodje”, which is made with regular dough that is also used for baking bread. However, here we will provide the recipe for a “saucijzenbroodje”, which is made with puff pastry. As these Dutch sausage rolls can vary in size, they are eaten as a meal (usually lunch) or as a hot snack. They are to be eaten warm, and can be either served straight from the oven of prepared, refrigerated and the re-heated in an oven or microwave. Children usually love this genuinely Dutch recipe.
- Pre-heat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius, gas mark 6) and lightly grease your baking tray
- Mix the minced meat in a bowl, together with the nutmeg, salt, pepper, soy sauce and one of the beaten eggs
- Roll a bit of the minced meat mix between your hand to form a sausage shape about as long as a sheet of puff pastry, and with the diameter of your thumb
- Put the sausage-shaped minced meat on top of each sheet of puff pastry
- Take a butter brush and brush some of the second beaten egg onto both sides of the puff pastry
- Roll the puff pastry tightly around the minced meat sausage
- Brush some more beaten egg on top of the sausage roll
- If you want to serve the rolls as snacks, you can cut each roll into three pieces. If you want to serve them as lunch, leave them in one piece
- Put the sausage rolls on the baking tray and put them in the heated oven for 20 minutes
After taking the sausage rolls out of the oven, they can be served immediately. Although Dutch recipes generally vary greatly in terms of how much fat and salt they contain, this particular Dutch recipe is relatively fatty and salty. This is mainly caused by the use of puff pastry, which contains fairly large amounts of butter. This Dutch food also shows a bit of the colonial past of the Netherlands, as one of the ingredients is soy sauce, which was incorporate in the Dutch cuisine as a result of the colonisation of Indonesia.
